The NIH is offering research grants to map addiction traits across inbred strains of mice and identify genetic modifiers. The grants aim to study how environmental factors and genetic variants influence phenotypic outcomes. The NIDA has allocated $2.0 million to fund 2 to 5 applications, while NIAAA plans to commit $1 million for 2-3 new grants. This initiative targets researchers interested in exploring gene-environment interactions in the context of addiction. Applications close on January 27, 2009.

| Description: | -Purpose. This funding opportunity announcement (FOA), requests research grant applications that propose to 1) map traits associated with addiction by varying environmental factors at different states of development across inbred strains of mice including using, but not limited to, selective breeding strategies, recombinant inbred mice, the collaborative cross, and haplotype associative mapping with inbred strains; or 2) Identify epigenetic and genetic modifiers that under different environmental and developmental conditions produces different phenotypic outcomes in mice carrying a defined genetic variant, (e.g., knockout, CNVs). A separate paragraph in the section on Specific Requirements, Objectives, and Scope addresses the interest of NIAAA. -Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the NIH research project (R01) grant mechanism. -Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. The NIDA has set aside $2.0 million in Fiscal Year 2009 to fund 2 to 5 applications and NIAAA intends to commit approximately $1 Million dollars total cost to fund 2-3 new grants in response to this FOA. |
