The National Institutes of Health is offering a grant to fund research focusing on expanding genetic epidemiologic methods for substance and alcohol use disorders. This grant aims to enhance the understanding of developmental pathways, clarify genetic and environmental influences on these disorders, refine phenotypic definitions, facilitate translation of findings into treatment and prevention strategies, and address methodological challenges in the field. Utilizing the NIH Research Project Grant (R01) award mechanism, this opportunity seeks to support projects that contribute to advancements in the field of genetic epidemiology for substance use disorders.

| Description: | -Purpose. This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) solicits research to expand the application of genetic epidemiologic methods to studies of substance and alcohol use disorders (SUDs/AUD, drug and alcohol abuse and dependence) by applying genetic epidemiologic approaches to advance our understanding of developmental trajectories of SUD/AUD, differentiate genetic and environmental factors in the development and maintenance of SUD/AUD, broaden and refine phenotypic definitions of SUDs/AUD, guide the translation of etiologic findings to treatment, prevention, gene-finding and molecular studies, and meet the methodologic challenges of the field. -Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the NIH Research Project Grant (R01) award mechanism, and runs in parallel with an FOA of identical scientific scope, PA-07-414, that solicits applications under the R03 mechanism and PA-07-415 that solicits applications under the R21 mechanism. -Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. Awards issued under this FOA are contingent upon the availability of funds and the submission of a sufficient number of meritorious applications. |
