The National Institutes of Health is offering the Genetic Epidemiology of Substance Use Disorders Grant (R03) to support small research projects focusing on applying genetic epidemiologic methods to advance the understanding of substance and alcohol use disorders. This grant aims to differentiate genetic and environmental factors in the development of SUD/AUD, refine phenotypic definitions, and address methodological challenges in the field. The R03 mechanism supports pilot studies, data analysis, research methodology development, and new technology projects.

| Description: | -Purpose. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) solicits small research projects to expand the application of genetic epidemiologic methods to studies of substance and alcohol use disorders (SUDs/AUD, drug and alcohol abuse and dependence) by applying genetic epidemiologic approaches to advance our understanding of developmental trajectories of SUD/AUD, differentiate genetic and environmental factors in the development and maintenance of SUD/AUD, broaden and refine phenotypic definitions of SUDs/AUD, guide the translation of etiologic findings to treatment, prevention, gene-finding and molecular studies, and meet the methodologic challenges of the field. -Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the NIH Small Research Grant (R03) award mechanism and runs in parallel with an FOA of identical scientific scope, PA -07-413, that solicits applications under the R01 mechanism, and PA -07-415, that solicits applications under the R21 mechanism. -The R03 grant mechanism supports different types of projects including pilot and feasibility studies; secondary analysis of existing data; small, self-contained research projects; development of research methodology; and development of new research technology. |
