This department is offering grants for the design, synthesis, and preclinical testing of potential treatment agents for drug addiction and relapse prevention. The focus is on developing new therapeutic targets and chemical entities based on recent advances in molecular neurobiological mechanisms underlying drug addiction. The funds available total $1.5 million in FY 2008 with variable award sizes and durations based on the proposed research. Applications are encouraged to address the pressing need for effective treatments and prevention strategies for drug addiction. Closing date: Jan 07, 2011.

| Description: | -Purpose. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) invites research applications aimed at design, synthesis, and preclinical testing of potential treatment agents for drug addiction and/or relapse prevention. Recent advances in molecular neurobiological mechanisms underlying drug addiction provide a basis for development of new therapeutic targets and chemical entities to treat and prevent relapses of drug addiction. -Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the NIH Research Project Grant (R01) award mechanism. -Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. NIDA intends to commit a total of $1.5 million in FY 2008 to this Program Announcement with set-aside funds (PAS). Awards issued under this FOA are contingent upon the availability of funds and the submission of a sufficient number of meritorious applications. Because the nature and scope of the proposed research will vary from application to application, it is anticipated that the size and duration of each award will also vary. The total amount awarded and the number of awards will depend upon the mechanism numbers, quality, duration, and costs of the applications received. |
