Description: -Purpose. The primary purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA), issued by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), the National Cancer Institute (NCI), the National Institute on Aging (NIA), and the Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS), National Institutes of Health (NIH), is to encourage the submission of high quality, preliminary research of humans that will advance the science of CAM. Such studies will ultimately provide a solid foundation and justification for larger, subsequent clinical studies to determine definitively the efficacy and effectiveness of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) approaches.-Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. Because the nature and scope of the proposed research will vary from application to application, it is anticipated that the size and duration of each award will also vary. The total amount awarded and the number of awards will depend upon the mechanism, numbers, quality, duration, and costs of the applications received. -Budget and Project Period. The total project period for an application submitted in response to this funding opportunity may not exceed three years. Direct costs are limited to $400,000 over an R21 three-year period, with no more than $250,000 in direct costs allowed in any single year. The R21 is not renewable.
