The NIH is offering the Drug Abuse Prevention Intervention Research Grant (R21) to support innovative research aiming to advance drug abuse and drug-related HIV prevention. This grant seeks proposals for the development and testing of novel prevention approaches, as well as the elucidation of processes related to intervention selection, adoption, and sustainability. Funding will vary based on the proposed research, with a focus on discovering population-level approaches to prevent drug abuse, dependence, and related issues. The closing date for applications is Sep 07, 2011.

| Description: | -Purpose. The purpose of this FOA is to encourage exploratory/developmental R21 research applications from institutions/organizations that propose to advance the science of drug abuse and drug-related HIV prevention through 1) the development of novel prevention approaches, 2) the testing of novel and adapted prevention intervention approaches 3) the elucidation of processes associated with the selection, adoption, adaptation, implementation, sustainability, and financing of empirically validated interventions, and 4) the development of new methodologies suitable for the design and analysis of prevention research studies. Programs of research are intended to provide pathways toward the discovery of population-level approaches for the prevention of drug abuse and dependence, drug-related problems (such as interpersonal violence, criminal involvement, and productivity loss), and drug related illness (such as comorbid drug and mental health problems or comorbid infections including HIV, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C). -Mechanism of Support. This FOA will use the NIH Exploratory/Developmental (R21) grant mechanism and runs in parallel with FOAs of identical scientific scope, PA-08-217 and PA-08-219, that solicit applications under the Research Project Grant (R01) and Small Research Grant (R03) award mechanisms, respectively. -Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. Because the nature and scope of the proposed research will vary from application to application, it is anticipated that the size and duration of each award will also vary. The total amount awarded and the number of awards will depend upon the mechanism, numbers, quality, duration, and costs of the applications received. |
