This department is offering a grant for research focused on modifying printed map scans through georeferencing to deliver historic geographic data. The research aims to enhance map graphics by enabling easier manipulation and optimization for specific uses such as recreation, emergency response, and scientific analysis. The recipient will investigate scientific processes and methods for transforming scans of lithographically printed maps into georeferenced digital files, while maintaining cartographic integrity. The goal is to streamline the georeferencing process and improve accessibility to historic cartographic information for modern GIS analysis. Deadline for submission is Feb 10, 2009.

| Description: | This cooperative agreement seeks research into modification of printed map scans leading to delivery of historic geographic data by georeferencing images of lithographically printed topographic maps. These georeferenced images will supplement and enhance the generation map graphics products by: permitting straightforward manipulation and mathematical transformation of map images to optimize the usability of the map for specific uses such recreation, emergency response, ecosystem/natural resource research and other scientific purposes, or general use. creating georeferenced electronic files of maps suitable for access through the Web. present historic cartographic information in a format suitable for viewing and analysis using modern geographic information science processes. making it easier for customers to meet their programmatic needs/requirements The award recipient will research the scientific process and methods for image transformations of scans of lithographically printed maps to georeferenced digital files. This includes requirements to retain scientific cartographic integrity of the original maps, transformation steps, and automated recognition of the shape and x-y location of the graticule intersection control points for image transformation. The research will determine the feasibility to improve the existing manual georeference process. |
