This department is offering the NFRP Exploration – Hypothesis Development Award to support innovative, high-risk, high-gain, and groundbreaking concepts in neurofibromatosis and/or Schwannomatosis research. The award aims to explore untested ideas that could lead to new hypotheses or principles, encouraging serendipitous observations. Applications should demonstrate innovation and novelty in the proposed research. Preliminary data presentation is encouraged but not mandatory. PI should clearly articulate the novelty and innovation of the research. Refer to the Program Announcement for complete details. Closing Date: April 14, 2009.

| Description: | The Exploration Hypothesis Development Award (EHDA) mechanism was first offered in FY08. Since that time, 21 EHDA applications have been received and 6 have been recommended for funding. The NFRP Exploration Hypothesis Development Award supports the initial exploration of innovative, untested, high-risk, high-gain, and potentially groundbreaking concepts in the neurofibromatosis and/or Schwannomatosis research fields. Results of studies conducted through this award may provide the scientific rationale upon which a new hypothesis can be based, or it should provide initial principles of an innovative hypothesis. This award is designed to provide investigators with the opportunity to pursue serendipitous observations. Some gaps in supporting rationale may exist due to a lack of available information. The presentation of preliminary data is encouraged, but not required. It is the responsibility of the Principal Investigator (PI) to clearly and explicitly articulate how the proposed research is innovative and how the concept is novel. See the Program Announcement for the full Funding Opportunity Description. |
