This Funding Announcement is not a request for applications. This announcement is to provide public notice of the National Park Service (NPS), intention to fund the following project activities. ABSTRACT Funding Announcement: P11AT30883 Project Title: Investigating the impact of current and future cruise ship emissions on air quality, visibility, and contaminant deposition in southeastern Alaska National Parks and Wilderness areas Recipient: University of Alaska Fairbanks Principle Cost Share: N/A New Award Anticipated Anticipated Award Statutory CFDA#: 15.944 Substantial Cooperation and Involvement by NPS The involvement and cooperation of the NPS will be substantial. For the past six years, Dr. Gende (NPS) has spearheaded a research and monitoring effort focused on understanding the presence and extent of impacts from cruise ships to parks in southeastern Alaska. Dr. Gende will serve on the Ph.D. committee of the graduate student and help accrue the data on operating conditions of the cruise ships (entry levels, locations, speeds) based on data collected from previous and ongoing efforts (e.g., Gende et al. 2011). These data will be necessary components for the model foundation and simulations of different cruise scenarios. Dr. Gende will also serve as coordinator to integrate other efforts in the parks that are relevant to this modeling effort including air quality monitoring in GLBA and KLGO, and opacity readings in wilderness areas such as Tracy Arm, as well as related efforts with the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation and the USFS. Dr. Gende will participate in drafting and reviewing of manuscripts and reports and assist in outreach of results to parks and the public. |
