This announcement is to provide public notice of the National Park Service(NPS) intention to fund this project under justification 505 DM 2.14 (B4). Funding Announcement Number: P12AS10392. Project Title: Culturally Responsive School Programs. Receipt: Hoonah City Schools. Total Anticipated Award Amount: $43,010.00.
Activities: Cooperative Agreement between National Park Service, Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve and Hoonah City Schools. The NPS intends to enter into a Cooperative Agreement to develop culturally responsive educational programs for Hoonah City School students. The purpose is to foster academic excellence, maintain traditional knowledge, instill pride in cultural heritage, build youth leadership skills, and strengthen ties between native students and their traditional homeland. Cooperatively develope culturally-responsive curricula and programs focused on developing a deeper understanding of park resources and what those resources reveal about Tlingit history will strengthen Hoonah youth’s connection to Glacier Bay homeland.
1. Curricula: would include opportunities for students to engage in both traditional and western ways of knowing about particular topics. This program involves contracting for curricula development and staff development training and arranging logistics for partner and community input into curricula themes and activities.
2. Science-based summer camp: A 3-day summer science camp to include opportunities for approximately 20 middle school students to learn and practice both western and traditional ways of knowing about the natural and cultural world. NPS and other biologists, anthropologists, and interpreters will work with school staff, community Elders, community partners (The City of Hoonah, the Hoonah Indian Association, Huna Heritage Foundation, Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium (SEARHC), US Forest Service), and other tribal members to convey information about resources, resource stewardship, learning systems, cultural history, and traditions to HCS students.
3. Implementing two (2) camping/backcountry experiences for Hoonah youth: A 4 day camping experience in Bartlett Cove, will be led by HCS and NPS staff. The trip will be designed to provide both natural and cultural resource information to students as well as in-depth experience with resource stewardship. A second 8-day backcountry experience, led by AWARE and NPS staff will focus on building leadership and healthy relationship skills. Both experiences will allow students to develop deep connections with homeland in a wilderness setting and will develop group dynamics and leadership skills.
