Additional Information

Agency Name: Region 7
Description: The intent of this fuels reduction project is to provide defensible space around a group of Northway Junction homes in order to mitigate the potential impacts of wildland fire spread from public lands (Tetlin NWR) onto subdivision properties. The treatment area includes approximately 15 acres in the immediate vicinity of private homes. Northway Junction has been identified by the State of Alaska and by the US Fish and Wildlife Service as a community at high risk from wildland fires originating on private and public lands.
Goals
1. Provide defensible space around homes in order to mitigate the potential impacts of wildland fire spread from public onto private lands.
2. Promote a collaborative approach to community fire hazard reduction by educating local communities and homeowners in “Firewise” concepts and engaging them in the process of planning, and implementing fuels mitigation.
3. Enhance employment opportunities and encourage small business development through the use of local labor resources.
4. Conduct treatment activities in a way that ensures the safety of line personnel and the public.
