Description: The Specialty Crop Research Initiative (SCRI) was established to solve critical industry issues through research and extension activities. Specialty crops are defined as fruits and vegetables, tree nuts, dried fruits, and horticulture and nursery crops, including floriculture. SCRI will give priority to projects that are multistate, multi-institutional, or trans-disciplinary; and include explicit mechanisms to communicate results to producers and the public. Projects must address at least one of five focus areas: research in plant breeding, genetics, and genomics to improve crop characteristics; efforts to identify and address threats from pests and diseases, including threats to specialty crop pollinators; efforts to improve production efficiency, productivity, and profitability over the long term; new innovations and technology, including improved mechanization and technologies that delay or inhibit ripening; and methods to prevent, detect, monitor, control, and respond to potential food safety hazards in the production and processing of specialty crops. Please Note: As of 2-4-2009 the RFA was updated to reflect a change in the “notification of intent to submit” deadline. The new date is March 2, 2009. See RFA for details

Version History

Version Modification Description Updated Date
Please Note: As of 4/2/2009, pages 19, 25, and 27 have been modified to address several inquiries regarding the implementation of section 736 of the FY 2009 Ominbus Appropriations Act (P.L. 111-8) which was enacted on March 11, 2009, and the use of unrecovered indirect costs to meet the matching requirements for this program in FY 2009. Applicants may use both the unrecovered indirect costs associated with the Federal Budget and the unrecovered indirect costs associated with the Non-Federal Budget to meet their matching requirements. However, indirect costs may not be recovered on third-party matching contributions. The modifications can be found on pages 19, 25, and 26 in Bold Red Text. Feb 18, 2010
In accordance with the FY 2009 Omnibus Appropriations Act, for the purposes of a grant made under section 412 of the Agricultural Research, Extension, and Education Reform Act of 1998, which established the Specialty Crop Research Initiative (SCRI), in-kind support from non-Federal sources in the form of unrecovered indirect costs may be used to meet the matching requirements under 412(e)(3). These indirect costs are those that are not otherwise charged against the grant and must be consistent with the approved indirect cost rate of the organization. This constitutes a change for the program and the SCRI request for applications (RFA) has been modified accordingly. Apr 02, 2009
Please Note: As of 2-4-2009 the RFA was updated to reflect a change in the "notification of intent to submit" deadline. The new date is March 2, 2009. See RFA for details Mar 12, 2009
