The Department of Health is offering a grant to reduce the burden of malaria in U.S. residents who travel to malaria-endemic countries and return home. This grant aims to target high burden areas like New York City and populations such as travelers visiting friends and relatives. The grant requires designing studies to identify barriers to malaria prevention in these communities, implementing intervention programs, measuring disease reduction, and creating a scalable approach for nationwide impact. The ultimate goal is to significantly decrease malaria cases in the United States.

Additional Information

Agency Name:: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention – ERA
Description:: The purpose of this FOA is to reduce the burden of malaria in U.S. residents who travel overseas to malaria-endemic countries and return to the United States. Consideration should be given to high burden areas and populations, such as New York City and persons whose purpose of travel is to visit friends and relatives (VFRs). The objectives of this FOA will be to design qualitative and quantitative studies to document the barriers that exist in various VFR communities leading to increased risk of malaria while traveling, use this knowledge obtained to design and implement targeted intervention programs to reduce disease risk and better protect travelers, document the reduction of disease in these communities, and develop an approach that can be applied to VFR communities nationwide to reduce malaria disease burden. The results of this work should lead to a reduction of malaria cases in the United States.
