| Description:: | The purpose of this funding opportunity is to solicit applications for the Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Doctoral Training Program. This program meets the Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB) goals of training the MCH workforce, and especially to enhance the epidemiologic capacity for assessment, planning, and delivery of health services to the MCH population. The Office of Epidemiology and Research (OER) is continuing support of this training grant under the Special Projects of Regional and National Significance (SPRANS) grant. Grants to institutions of higher learning will support doctoral students who elect a relevant MCH applied epidemiologic analysis as the basis for their research and dissertation, utilizing program information and data from a state, county, or city department of health. Of particular interest is to improve the science of evaluating health care by refining, augmenting, collecting, and analyzing both traditional (disease and intervention) measures and measures of overall maternal and child well-being (measures of health-related quality of life).
It is expected that each school will support one or two students during each budget period. The majority of the funds shall be provided to the student in the form of stipends and/or tuition support and no student may receive more than three years of funding through this program. Funds shall be awarded after the student has selected a relevant dissertation topic and received the approval of their research committee. Additionally, funds may be used to support attendance by the student at the Annual Maternal and Child Health Epidemiology Conference. It is strongly encouraged that students who receive support through this program attend the Annual Maternal and Child Health Epidemiology Conference annually in order to network with their peers from other educational institutions. It is anticipated that these awards will result in publications in national journals that address the analytical needs of the MCH state and local communities in their interventions to improve maternal and child health. |
