Applicants are invited to submit innovative proposals using administrative databases, health care records, clinical trial datasets, patient registries, cohort studies, or other resources to further our understanding of treatment outcomes from pharmacologic or combination pharmacologic/non-pharmacologic interventions, particularly involving non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or opioids, in older individuals with chronic pain. Proposed studies may include, but are not limited to 1) identification of patient-, medication-, provider-, or system-level predictors of treatment outcomes in older individuals; 2) comparative safety and/or effectiveness studies of different treatment approaches for chronic pain in older adults; 3) development of methodologies linking datasets to address pain-related questions; or 4) evaluation of the utility of pain-related measures or indices in guiding treatment initiation, titration, or discontinuation in specific populations of older adults (e.g., individuals with dementia.) |
