This grant offered by the National Institute on Drug Abuse and the National Institute of Mental Health aims to support research projects focusing on reducing prescription drug misuse while promoting appropriate medical use of drugs with abuse potential. The grant seeks a range of studies, including epidemiologic research, basic science investigations on cellular mechanisms, and health services applications to develop effective clinical practices for prevention and treatment. Award amounts and durations will vary based on the proposed research projects. Closing date for applications is on May 07, 2011 12:00:00 AM EDT.

| Description: | -Purpose. The National Institute on Drug Abuse and the National Institute of Mental Health invites research applications to reduce prescription drug misuse while supporting the appropriate medical use of therapeutic agents that carry an abuse liability. A range of research is being solicited to combat prescription drug misusefrom epidemiologic research specifying the extent and nature of the problem (including health and social consequences) as it relates to each specific drug and identifying determinants and trajectories of use. Basic science applications to determine mechanisms of action at the cellular level and possible mechanisms or medications to block or lessen the abuse potential are encouraged, as are health services applications with the goal of discovering effective clinical practices that identify those at risk and designing and disseminating prevention and treatment interventions. -Mechanism of Support. This FOA will use the NIH Exploratory/Developmental (R21) grant mechanism and runs in parallel with a FOA of identical scientific scope, PA-08-127, that encourages applications under the R01 and PA-08-129 that encourages applications under the R03 mechanism. -Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. Because the nature and scope of the proposed research will vary from application to application, it is anticipated that the size and duration of each award will also vary. The total amount awarded and the number of awards will depend upon the mechanism, numbers, quality, duration, and costs of the applications received. |
