This grant from the National Institute on Drug Abuse aims to support research addressing the intersection of drug abuse and the evolving dynamics of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the U.S. Emphasis is placed on new AIDS cases among minorities and women, the role of heterosexual transmission, and developing innovative preventive interventions. Internationally, research on adapting effective U.S. interventions to diverse populations is encouraged. The FOA uses the NIH Research Project Grant (R01) mechanism and is part of a series including R03 and R21 mechanisms. Funding is subject to availability, with awards dependent on the submission of high-quality applications.

| Description: | -Purpose. The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) from the National Institute on Drug Abuse is to encourage drug abuse research to address the changing dynamics of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the U.S., such as the increasing over-representation of minorities and women among new AIDS cases and role of heterosexual sex as a transmission route. Studies are needed to develop novel preventive interventions that more effectively address the evolving epidemic. Internationally, studies are needed on how to translate and adapt interventions that have proved effective in the U.S. to other communities and international settings and to learn from other conditions and cultures to inform our understanding of the causes, consequences, and differences in HIV-associated risks, morbidity, and mortality in diverse populations. -Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the NIH Research Project Grant (R01) award mechanism and runs in parallel with an FOA of identical scientific scope, PA-07-308 that solicits applications under the R03 mechanism and PA-07-309 that solicits applications under the R21 mechanism. -Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. Awards issued under this FOA are contingent upon the availability of funds and the submission of a sufficient number of meritorious applications. |
