NIDA is offering a grant for neuroscience research on drug abuse, focusing on understanding the processes and mechanisms of drug addiction. This grant utilizes the NIH R21 award mechanism, supporting research using model systems, animals, and/or humans. Researchers can explore topics like drug dependence, addiction, withdrawal, and treatment. Funding varies based on the proposed research, with the number of awards depending on application quality and costs. Applicants can also consider related grants under different mechanisms for research enhancement.

| Description: | -Purpose. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) requests research grant applications in the areas of neuroscience and behavioral neuroscience research that are relevant to the understanding of the process(es) and mechanisms underlying drug abuse and addiction, including use, dependence, addiction, withdrawal, and treatment, and may be conducted using model systems, animals, and/or humans. -Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the NIH Research Project Grant (R21) award mechanism and runs in parallel with an FOA of identical scientific scope, PA-07-226, that solicits applications under the R01 mechanism and PA-07-228 that solicits applications under the R03 mechanism. Applications of related or identical scientific scope are solicited also under the Academic Research Enhancement Award (R15) (http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PA-06-042.html). -Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. Because the nature and scope of the proposed research will vary from application to application, it is anticipated that the size and duration of each award will also vary. The total amount awarded and the number of awards will depend upon the mechanism numbers, quality, duration, and costs of the applications received. |
