| Description: | The overall goal of NIH-supported career development programs is to help ensure that a diverse pool of highly trained scientists are available in adequate numbers and in appropriate research areas to address the Nation’s biomedical, behavioral, and clinical research needs.
Purpose: The purpose of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease (NIDDK) Mentored Research Scientist Development Award (K01) is to provide support and protected time (three, four, or five years) for an intensive, supervised career development experience in the biomedical, behavioral, or clinical sciences leading to research independence. The NIDDK invites K01 applications from advanced postdoctoral and/or newly independent research scientists (usually with a Ph.D. degree) in biomedical or behavioral sciences who are pursuing careers in research areas supported by the NIDDK. Mechanism of Support: This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) will utilize the NIH Mentored Research Scientist Development Award (K01) mechanism. Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards: The number of awards will depend upon the quality and merit of applications received and the availability of funds. Budget and Project Period: Because the nature and scope of the proposed career award program will vary from application to application, it is anticipated that the size and duration of each award will also vary. Although the financial plans of the NIDDK provide support for this program, awards pursuant to this funding opportunity are contingent upon the availability of funds and the receipt of a sufficient number of meritorious applications. PHS 398 Career Development Award Supplemental Form Component Sections: Items 2-5 (Candidate Information) and 10-13 (Research Plan) are limited to a total of 25 pages. Eligible Institutions/Organizations: Institutions/organizations listed in Section III are eligible to apply. Eligible Project Director/Principal Investigator (PD/PI): Also referred to as the Applicant or Candidate, individuals with the skills, knowledge, and resources necessary to carry out the proposed research and career development activities are invited to work with their mentor and sponsoring institution to develop an application for support. Individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, individuals with disabilities, and individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds are always encouraged to apply for NIH support. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, non-citizen nationals, or permanent residents, who hold a research or health-professional doctoral degree and can commit a minimum of 75% of full-time professional effort conducting research and relevant career development activities specified in the application.See Section III. Number of PDs/PIs: Only one PD/PI may be designated on the application. Number of Applications: Applicants may only have one individual Career Development Award application pending peer review at any time. Resubmissions: Applicants may submit a resubmission application, but such application must include an Introduction addressing the previous peer review critique (Summary Statement).See new NIH policy on resubmission (amended) applications (NOT-OD-09-003, NOT-OD-09-016). Renewals: K01 awards are not renewable and are not transferable from one PD/PI to another. |
