NINR Mentored Research Scientist Development Award for Underrepresented or Disadvantaged Investigators (K01) by the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR)

– NINR also recognizes the lack of diversity of qualified nurse scientists in research settings. This PA seeks to address this problem by enhancing the research capabilities of underrepresented or disadvantaged nurse investigators so that these individuals may establish research laboratories and research programs in nursing science. There is abundant evidence that the research, biomedical, and health enterprise will directly benefit from this broader inclusion.

– The purpose of the present PA is to encourage the development of qualified underrepresented or disadvantaged nurse scientists to become independent investigators in research settings. An applicant may request a project period of up to 3 years. Salary support for each recipient will be for a maximum of $50,000 plus fringe benefits with a minimum requirement of 75% time and effort committed. Each year up to $20,000 may be requested for research development support. Although the financial plans of the NINR provide support for this program, awards pursuant to this PA are contingent upon the availability of funds. Awards are not renewable.

– This PA will use the Mentored Research Scientist Development Award (K01) mechanism. This mechanism is described in program announcement PA-00-019 (NIH Guide, December 3, 1999; http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PA-00-019.html; NOT-OD-05-011; NOT-DA-05-001; and addendum NOT-EB-03-003). Although all general guidelines of PA-00-019 will apply, this PA contains provisions that are unique to this initiative.

– The applicant must be a nurse and have a research or a health-professional doctorate or its equivalent, and must have demonstrated the capacity or potential for highly productive independent research in the period after the doctorate. Eligibity is limited. Awards will be limited to citizens or non-citizen nationals of the United States or to individuals who have been lawfully admitted for permanent residence (i.e., in possession of an Alien Registration Receipt Card) at the time of application. Only one application from an applicant will be considered at one time.

– Researchers may submit (an) application(s) if their domestic institution has any of the following characteristics: (a) for-profit or non-profit organization, or (b) public or private institution, such as a university, college, hospital, or research laboratory. Foreign institutions are not eligible to apply. Applications must be prepared using the PHS 398 research grant application instructions and forms. – Because the nature and scope of the proposed research will vary from application to application, it is anticipated that the size and duration of each award will also vary.
