The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Red Bluff Fish and Wildlife Office, Endangered Species Program is offering funding for a case study evaluating the environmental impact of removing barred owls from northern and California spotted owl habitats. This grant aims to assess the response of spotted owls to the removal of barred owls, with monitoring lasting at least 5 years. The findings will enhance understanding of the interactions between these owl species and inform management strategies to protect the spotted owl population and support their recovery. Application deadline: Aug 11, 2008.

| Description: | Funding is available through the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Red Bluff Fish and Wildlife Office, Endangered Species Program. The funding will be used to evaluate the environmental effects of a proposal to implement one or more case studies that will experimentally remove barred owls that have colonized northern and California spotted owl habitats in California in study areas that have adequate baseline information so that we can assess spotted owl response. In areas of barred owl removal, monitoring will occur for at least 5 years to assess changes in spotted owl site occupancy and reproduction. The information learned from these case studies will contribute to the knowledge base of competitive interactions between spotted owls and barred owls and be used to recommend management actions that reduce the negative effects on spotted owls and promote recovery of northern spotted owl across its range as well as the conservation of California spotted owl. |
